Blog Post #3
For Blog Post #3, I read There was an Old Lady who
Swallowed a Fly written and illustrated by Simms Taback. The artwork was done using mixed media and
collage on craft paper. This book won a Caldecott Honor award. Mr. Taback
illustrated every part of every page. He tells the story of the Old Lady who
swallows various animals. There is a repetition of the initial sentence “There
was an old lady who swallowed a____” throughout the book making it easy for
kids to keep up with the story. This offers predictability and continuity as
the students read the text with a teacher or a parent. It is a fun story with
vivid illustrations. The old lady gets fatter and fatter as she tries to accommodate
larger animals like a cat, dog, cow and horse. The opposing page of the story
has cartoon like art with the animals talking to one another. The front cover
and the back cover or the case of the book is illustrated as well.
This award winner is full of color and vivid illustrations
put together to tell a funny, easy to predict story.
